The original is made from one piece of basalt, weighs 24 tons and has a diameter of 3.6 meters. The stone was originally mistaken for a calendar stone, but that was not entirely correct. It turned out to be the holy calendar, which had only 260 days and was used by priests and astrologers to make predictions. The images refer to the beginning of the Aztec world and also predict the end. The Aztecs believed that they lived in the last creation of a series of five. Every creation was called a sun.
In the middle circle you see the fifth creation, the sun god "Tonatiuh" or the earth god "Tlaltecuhtli".
Around it you see four rectangular images that symbolize the earlier creations that were destroyed by jaguars, water, wind and rain.
On the outer ring are the 20 days of the Aztec month.
